The Old Venetian Port In Chania

The Old Venetian Port is the jewel not only of the Old Town of Chania but also of the whole city. The innumerable cafes and patisseries will not leave you fasting, while the shops with tourist items, leather and traditional products respond to all the wallets and of course will excite the children. In recent years the development and renovation of many parts of the old city have managed to turn the waterfront into a pole of attraction hotels chania not only for tourists but also for the  locals!

The Venetian Fortress Firkas is located at the beginning of the port, in Akti Koundourioti. It was built by the Venetians, who wanted a strategically ideal place to place their guard. Later and until 1898, it was used by the Ottomans for the same purpose and bears the Turkish name Firkas, meaning barracks. In 1913, it finally passed into Greek hands, marking the union of Crete with Greece. The fortress can be visited and offers a very nice view of the whole port. Next to the Fortress lies the Maritime Museum of Crete which is a very nice activity for the whole family, especially for the male members. The Museum is old, but very well preserved with several exhibits that will lead the visitor to get acquainted with the history of the city, with thematic sections starting from the Bronze Age to the Revolution of Crete.
